  • Beethoven-Fur Elise

Perhaps one of Beethoven's most popular pieces-"Fur Elise" (translated into For Elise). The picture is one of Beethoven when he was a middle-age man (fairly old, but nowhere close to done as far as musical accomplishments are concerned). Thank you for watching.

  • Beethoven: Sonata No.21 in C Major, "Waldstein" (Pletnev)

This is one of Beethoven's most important works, often classed with the Appassionata and Les Aideux as one of the great sonatas of his middle period. There is too much to say about the structural/harmonic innovations of this piece, but I suppose the most notable features about it are the extended modulation to the mediant (E major) in the first movement (the same modulation also features prominently in one of the most important late sonatas, the Hammerklavier), the linking of the first movement's 1st and 2nd themes via a 5-note falling motif, and the daring (not to say virtuosic) textures of the final rondo. Movement I: 00:00 Movement II: 10:30 Movement III: 14:14* Pletnev's performance is incredibly lively and buoyant -- check out the Rondo, where he thankfully avoids the overpedaling t...

  • Für Elise (Piano version)

Beethoven Himself.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKPhGHAdqk0 The Moonlight Sonata - 60 Minutes version The identity of "Elise" has eluded historians and scholars for decades. The bagatelle wasn’t discovered and published until 40 years after Beethoven’s death, so he certainly wasn’t around to tell tales of the woman who had inspired the composition. Scholars believe “Elise” must have been pretty close to Beethoven, but no one has been able to definitively prove who she really was. Over the years, however, two frontrunners have emerged: Therese Malfatti and Elisabeth Roeckel. Elisabeth Roeckel, known to her friends as Elise, was the younger sister of Joseph Roeckel, a singer who performed in Beethoven’s opera Fidelio. She wrote letters documenting her flirtatious relationship with the...

  • Beethoven: Sonata No.32 in C Minor (Pogorelich)

Very possibly Beethoven's greatest sonata (it may or may not be edged out by the Hammerklavier, and also No.31 has a good punt at the title), and certainly one of the greatest piano works ever written. There is a lot to say about this, but suffice to say that Chopin admired it enough to imitate both the beginning and end of the first movement (in the opening of his B-flat Minor sonata, and in the end of the Revolutionary etude respectively). The boogie-woogie variation is at 16:47, but the best moment of the generally awesome second movement comes at 21:56. [Brendel's comment: "...perhaps nowhere else in piano literature does mystical experience feel so immediately close at hand."] This is also a marvellous rendition by Pogorelich, who plays with absolutely clarity, with no indulgence an...

  • Ludwig van Beethoven - Rage over a lost penny Op. 129 (audio + sheet music)

"The Rondo alla ingharese quasi un capriccio in G major, Op. 129, is a piano rondo by Ludwig van Beethoven. It is better known by the title Rage Over a Lost Penny, Vented in a Caprice (from German: Die Wut über den verlorenen Groschen, ausgetobt in einer Caprice). This title appears on the autograph manuscript, but not in Beethoven's hand, and has been attributed to his friend Anton Schindler. It is a favourite with audiences and is frequently performed as a show piece. Despite the late opus number, the work is now dated between 1795 and 1798. Beethoven left the piece unpublished and incomplete; it was published in 1828 by Anton Diabelli, who obscured the fact that it had been left unfinished. The manuscript disappeared for many years and was considered lost until it turned up in the Unite...

Perhaps one of Beethoven's most popular pieces-"Fur Elise" (translated into For Elise). The picture is one of Beethoven when he was a middle-age man (fairly old, but nowhere close to done as far as musical accomplishments are concerned). Thank you for watching.

Movement I: 00:00 Movement II: 10:30 Movement III: 14:14* Pletnev's performance is incredibly lively and buoyant -- check out the Rondo, where he thankfully avoids the overpedaling that even other great pianists end up doing (Beethoven's long sustained pedal marks, which ignore changes of harmony, were appropriate on the dry instruments of his time, but are clearly out of place on the modern grand, with its rich sonorities and lush sustaining pedal.) It's always nice to hear a performance of a Beethoven sonata that its not wearingly overserious, and is willing to pull on the structure a bit to emphasise "in-the-moment" textures (see 20:40) -- although by any measure this is a very serious performance of a very important part of the piano literature.

She wrote letters documenting her flirtatious relationship with the composer when she was younger, and remained close to him until his death in 1827. Roeckel visited Beethoven just a few days before he passed away, taking a lock of his hair and accepting a gift of one of his quills. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lkcvrxj0eLY Beethoven - Für Elise (60 Minutes Version) The woman most people believe to be Elise, however, has long been Austrian singer and performer Therese Malfatti. It’s thought that Beethoven proposed to Malfatti around 1810, and she either rejected him outright or accepted and changed her mind shortly thereafter. If that’s the case, why would it be named “Für Elise” instead of “Für Therese”? The argument is that it was "Für Therese"—and somewhere over the years, the name was mistranslated. Another fact working in Malfatti’s favor: The original manuscript in Beethoven’s hand was found in her possessions after her death, apparently labeled “Für Therese.” It has since gone missing, resulting in a classical music mystery for the ages. Elise—whoever she is—isn’t the only mystery woman in Beethoven’s life. The subject of his “Immortal Beloved” letters has also been much debated over the years. Beethoven - Symphony No. 5 (FULL) - Symphony No. 5 in C minor The four-note opening motif are known worldwide, with the motif appearing frequently in popular culture, from disco versions to rock and roll covers, to uses in film and television. http://twitter.com/YtAndrearomano6 http://www.facebook.com/9BeethovenFan 1 First movement: Allegro con brio 2 Second movement: Andante con moto 3 Third movement: Scherzo. Allegro 4 Fourth movement: Allegro The Symphony No. 5 in C minor of Ludwig van Beethoven, Op. 67, was written between 1804–1808. It is one of the best-known compositions in classical music, and one of the most frequently played symphonies. First performed in Vienna's Theater an der Wien in 1808, the work achieved its prodigious reputation soon afterward. E. T. A. Hoffmann described the symphony as "one of the most important works of the time". The symphony consists of four movements. Since the Second World War it has sometimes been referred to as the "Victory Symphony". "V" is the Roman character for the number five; the phrase "V for Victory" became well known as a campaign of the Allies of World War II. That Beethoven's Victory Symphony happened to be his Fifth (or vice versa) is coincidence. Some thirty years after this piece was written, the rhythm of the opening phrase – "dit-dit-dit-dah" – was used for the letter "V" in Morse code, though this is probably also coincidental. The BBC, during World War Two, prefaced its broadcasts to Europe with those four notes, played on drums. The Fifth Symphony had a long development process, as Beethoven worked out the musical ideas for the work. The first "sketches" (rough drafts of melodies and other musical ideas) date from 1804 following the completion of the Third Symphony. However, Beethoven repeatedly interrupted his work on the Fifth to prepare other compositions, including the first version of Fidelio, the Appassionata piano sonata, the three Razumovsky string quartets, the Violin Concerto, the Fourth Piano Concerto, the Fourth Symphony, and the Mass in C. The final preparation of the Fifth Symphony, which took place in 1807–1808, was carried out in parallel with the Sixth Symphony, which premiered at the same concert. Beethoven was in his mid-thirties during this time; his personal life was troubled by increasing deafness. In the world at large, the period was marked by the Napoleonic Wars, political turmoil in Austria, and the occupation of Vienna by Napoleon's troops in 1805. The symphony was written at his lodgings at the Pasqualati House in Vienna. The final movement quotes from a revolutionary song by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle.

[Brendel's comment: "...perhaps nowhere else in piano literature does mystical experience feel so immediately close at hand."] This is also a marvellous rendition by Pogorelich, who plays with absolutely clarity, with no indulgence and quite a lot of intensity (as in "focus", not "aggressive"). The tempo choice is especially good -- the music has space to breathe. Movement I: 00:00 Movement II: 9:54 (Theme and Variations)

The manuscript disappeared for many years and was considered lost until it turned up in the United States just after World War II. From the original manuscript, musicologist Erich Hertzmann prepared a new edition, published in 1949. The performance time runs between five and six minutes; the tempo of the piece is Allegro vivace (132--160 quarter notes a minute). The indication alla ingharese is of interest, as no such word as "ingharese" exists in standard Italian. To people of Beethoven's day, "gypsy music" and "Hungarian music" were synonymous terms. Beethoven seems to have conflated alla zingarese (in the gypsy style) and all'ongarese (in the Hungarian style) to come up with a unique term alla ingharese. Robert Schumann wrote of the work that "it would be difficult to find anything merrier than this whim... It is the most amiable, harmless anger, similar to that felt when one cannot pull a shoe from off the foot", citing the work as an instance of Beethoven's earthliness against those fixated upon a transcendental image of the composer." Marked Allegro vivace and in 2/4, the Rondo a capriccio combines a familiar rondo scheme with Beethoven's singular variation technique. The Rondo theme itself has two parts, each consisting of an eight-measure antecedent-consequent phrase. The statements of this darting, quicksilver theme are separated by episodes that are just as frenetic. In one of the Rondo's most distinct features, each return of the main theme is different from its initial presentation. Such alterations range from graceful ornamentation of the melodic line to changes of mode from major to minor. During one statement, the tune appears in the left hand, while in the lengthy coda, Beethoven's treatment of the material becomes conspicuously developmental. It is possibly this departure from a more conventional conception of the rondo that led Beethoven to use the expression "quasi un capriccio" (like a fantasy). A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in Western art music, he remains one of the most famous and influential of all composers.
